Laptop PC Hard Drives: How to Choose the Right Storage Capacity

There are two main factors you want to look at when performing a comparison of laptop PC hard drives. First you want to look at the storage capacity of the PC's hard drive. The information and data held by a hard drive is measured in gigabytes(GB). For basic computing functions like surfing the web, checking email, and downloading a reasonable amount of files, laptop PC hard drives with 60 or 80 GB are sufficient. Most laptop manufacturers offer hard drives with storage space ranging from 80 GB to 160 GB, with some offering up to 300 GB. There are multimedia laptops available that have dual hard drives installed with a total storage capacity of 400-1000 GB. Those PC computers are often known as "extreme" laptops.

The other factor to consider when comparing laptop PC hard drives is the speed of the drives. The faster a drive spins the faster information/ data is read and written. The three speeds laptop PC hard drives usually come in are 4200 RPM, 5400 RPM, and 7200 RPM. The
standard for most basic laptop PCs on the market today is 5400 RPM.

The hard drive is where your operating system, programs files, and data files are all stored. When you access a file or program the data is loaded into the laptop memory for more efficient usability. As long as you have enough memory(RAM) installed into your laptop PC, the hard drive's virtual memory will not have to kick in to support the data load. Virtual memory operates much slower than the normal RAM installed into your laptop. Properly choosing your hard drive, RAM, and processor are all critical to having your laptop PC perform the actions you require in a smooth and efficient manner. So do a quick comparison of laptop PC hard drives before making your final decision on a new or refurbished laptop. If your computing needs are basic then 60 or 80 GB will do just fine. If you're going to be downloading or working with large files, such as music and video files, or an above average number of files then bump up the storage capacity of your laptop PC hard drive.
